Symphony No.5 or Symphony No.6… Which is your favourite? Join conductor Andrew Manze in the Music Room for a conversation about the concert.

Dedicated to Sibelius, Vaughan Williams’s Fifth Symphony is the English symphony of your dreams: a vision of rural peace, hauntingly beautiful and aglow with the spirit of folk song. So the one thing no-one expected was his sixth: a shattering vision of a world laid waste by World War II, told in music of devastating intensity and power.

Two different faces of one very British genius, both utterly unforgettable – and conductor Andrew Manze loves them both. These two masterpieces are paired together with atmospheric miniatures by Vaughan Williams’s musical hero, Jean Sibelius.
