8 July 1936 – 16 February 2022
Born in Liverpool, Ken Jones was a founding member of the Merseyside Youth Orchestra, now the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He studied violin under Miss Hilda Dold achieving his Honours Certificate of the London College of Music in 1951. At 16 he wanted to study to music to a higher level, however his father, a foreman at Tate and Lyle, didn’t think music was a proper job so Ken started work as a laboratory technician.
All his life Ken continued to play both violin and viola in amateur orchestras and quartets and he was an avid concert goer around Manchester where he settled. Through an early contact with the stringed instrument department at Rushworth and Draper under the guidance of Fallowfield and Passey he also became an avid collector and repairer of stringed instruments and many children around the Wigan/Leigh area had their first violin from Ken.
Professionally Ken became a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at UMIST and used to say that he learnt everything about teaching from his violin lessons with Miss Dold.
Music was woven through Ken’s life and we hope that the funds donated in his memory will help the next generations of Liverpudlians to enjoy music as much as he did.
