Andrew Manze conductor
Cormac Henry flute
Dag Wirén once wrote the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. It wasn’t a hit, but his catchy and hugely popular String Serenade had already made his name. As a fan of Carl Nielsen, he would have been delighted to be paired with Nielsen’s idyllic yet eccentric Flute Concerto performed in these concerts by the Orchestra’s own Cormac Henry. Nielsen called Beethoven “the revolutionary”.
Certainly the Eighth Symphony broke new ground even for Beethoven - drama and lyricism abound alongside tongue-in-cheek moments and a few surprises.
The concert will be available to watch from 7pm on Tuesday 19 January, preceded by a live preconcert talk on Zoom at 7pm with BBC Radio 3 broadcaster and author Stephen Johnson, and a post-concert Zoom q and a session with flautist Cormac Henry, violinist Kate Marsden and conductor Andrew Manze in a sort of ‘post match analysis’, where you can ask questions and participate. Further information on how to join the Zoom will be sent to you after you purchase a ticket. You can watch the video at any point without the Zoom element. Please note on demand videos will only be available for 30 days from the date of initial broadcast.
