Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko Win Prestigious Recording Awards Double!

Thursday 20 April 2017

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko were thrilled to win two awards at the prestigious BBC Music Magazine Awards 2017 last night for their recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies 1, 2 and 5, released in 2016 on the ONYX Classics label.

In the words of BBC Music Magazine, the recording is ‘a triumphant celebration of ten years since Petrenko became the youngest ever principal conductor in the Liverpool ensemble’s history, and an affirmation of a brilliant musical partnership.’

At the Awards ceremony at King’s Place in London, before a packed audience from the music industry and special guests, the recording was announced as ‘Orchestral Recording of the Year’ – a category decided by public vote. It was accepted on stage on behalf of the Orchestra and Petrenko by Andrew Harvey, Joint Assistant Leader of the Orchestra, and Sandra Parr, Director of Artistic Planning.

And the recording took the BBC Music Magazine Awards’ most prestigious title, crowned ‘Recording of the Year 2016’ as voted by the BBC Music Magazine Jury. This award was presented by Dame Joan Bakewell and accepted on stage by James Clark, Joint Leader of the Orchestra, Chief Executive, Michael Eakin and Matthew Cosgrove, Chief Executive of ONYX Classics.

Vasily Petrenko was unable to attend the Awards, though on receiving the news of the accolades said:

‘Thank you for these beautiful awards, to everyone who voted for us online, to the BBC Music Magazine Awards jury, and most of all to my colleagues in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for sharing these Awards with me.

‘Tchaikovsky has always been important to me. His Children’s Album was on the table of every Russian family for their kids to study. He was born in my home town St. Petersburg in the same year, 1840, that Liverpool Philharmonic was founded by a group of the city’s music lovers.

‘We started this Tchaikovsky recording project during my 10th year in Liverpool as Chief Conductor, programming his six symphonies for our 175th anniversary season. It’s been a wonderful experience to perform his symphonies in concert in this city, with this great orchestra, and to record them too. So my thanks as well to Matthew Cosgrove at ONYX for giving us this special opportunity, and to all my colleagues at Liverpool Philharmonic who helped make this project happen.’

Michael Eakin, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Chief Executive added: ‘Congratulations to Vasily and our musicians on this fantastic achievement and to Matthew Cosgrove and the team at ONYX. Liverpool Philharmonic currently has one of the most ambitious recording programmes of any UK orchestra. We view our recordings as our international calling card; along with concert broadcasts with partners including BBC Radio and Classic FM, they take our music-making in Liverpool beyond the concert stage to a world-wide audience, showcasing our Orchestra under the baton of our Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko as a premiere league ensemble, deeply rooted in our city and committed to music excellence.’
