Vasily Petrenko Voted Gramophone Classical Music Awards Artist of the Year 2017

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, who was the Gramophone Classical Music Awards Young Artist of the Year in 2007, received the Artist of the Year award last night in London in the only publicly-chosen award in the prestigious Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2017 - the ‘Oscars of the classical music world’.

As the biggest names in classical music gathered at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue (Wednesday 13 September 2017) for the 40th anniversary of the Gramophone Awards, Gramophone paid particular tribute to Petrenko’s extraordinary work with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and their critically-acclaimed recordings of Tchaikovsky and Elgar symphonies on Onyx, which have been received with universal acclaim.

The recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 5 won the BBC Music Magazine Awards Recording of the Year, and the public vote for Orchestral Recording of the Year earlier this year.

The recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 3, 4 and 6 released by Onyx earlier this year clinched Gramophone’s Recording of the Month in March.

Gramophone's review said: ‘Petrenko’s fast and furious approach once again pays off with invigorating performances that dispel Russian gloom. The RLPO play their socks off and must rank as one on the finest “Russian Orchestras” in the UK today.’

Gramophone’s Artist of the Year is voted for by the public – readers of Gramophone and visitors to its various social media outlets.

On collecting his Artist of the Year Award, Vasily Petrenko, who had flown in especially from concert rehearsals in Moscow to attend the Gramophone Awards said:

‘‘I’m honoured to receive this Award and thank Gramophone, the members of the public who voted for me, and my colleagues at Liverpool Philharmonic. They’re great musicians and it’s a privilege to make music with them in concerts and on recordings. I’m looking forward to working together on many more exciting projects.’
