Gwendolyn Cawdron

Viola
Adopted by Jon & Sally Sheard

Born in Chicago, IL, USA, Gwen began violin at the age of five and viola at age sixteen. She studied viola performance in America and Austria, completing her Masters degree at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, in 2008. Following her studies Gwen joined the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, where she played as a Tutti member for seven years.

In 2016 Gwen moved to Liverpool to join the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Associate Principal Viola (no. 2), a position she shares. Teaching is one of her great loves, and she teaches violin and viola privately, coaches through the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, is a Guest Artist with the Royal Northern College of Music Young Violas program, and coaches with the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain.

In addition to playing and teaching viola, Gwen is a health and wellbeing enthusiast and a keen yogi. In 2022 she went through with a life goal and completed a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training qualification. She now teaches yoga to her orchestra colleagues at the RLPO, fitting classes in around the rehearsal schedule. Gwen is passionate about encouraging musicians to warm up their bodies before they play their instruments, and has created two YouTube videos and the Musicians Warmup Timer for this purpose. Find these here:

Fun fact:
In addition to being a viola player and teacher, Gwen is a qualified yoga teacher and teaches yoga classes to her colleagues in the RLPO!
