What is your earliest musical memory?
Being taken to a BBC Welsh Orchestra concert conducted by Rae Jenkins when I was about 4 years old. After that, I remember exploring my dad's record collection - often without his knowledge!
What is your most memorable moment with the Orchestra?
Playing the Suk "Asrael" Symphony in Prague in 1988. We were performing at the very start of the the revolution, and were very aware of the political importance of the concert. Many of the military attended, meaning that it was about much more than the music - politically it was a very highly-charged evening.
If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
I originally planned to go to medical school (oddly enough at the University of Liverpool), but on reflection I would be more attracted to the world of particle physics - quantum mechanics always intrigued me at school, and the more I read about it, the less I understand it!
If you could give one piece of advice to anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps what would it be?
My music teacher had a plaque in his violin case that read "Viola: left hand, bow: right hand".
