Robert Shepley

Viola

What was your earliest musical memory?

Watching Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music as a young child.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration and why?

Ravel and Stéphane Grappelli! Even though they were very different musicians, they have both inspired me and made me want to emulate their art. Although, I have never been inspired to play jazz viola. That would just be wrong.

What's the best thing about being a member with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra?

I love the variety – in a few weeks from playing some of the greatest classical pieces ever composed at the BBC Proms to playing more popular music at the Pops or Beatles concerts. I also play the guitar, banjo and mandolin, and some of my favourite moments have been playing the banjo in Porgy and Bess – I love Gershwin.
