Stephan Mayer

First Violin
Adopted by Carmel Stewart

Originally from Graz, Austria, Stephan Mayer studied in his hometown with Thomas Zehetmair, amongst other teachers, at the Kunstuniversität.

After graduation Stephan moved to London to study with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During his second year of postgraduate studies, he started a successful freelance career, which led him to settle in the UK and work with most major UK orchestras over the next few years.

In 2001, he joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

One particular career highlight has been performing in an orchestral concert with Randy Newman who impressed everyone in rehearsals because he'd heard a wrong note. This happened while the whole orchestra were playing fortissimo and turned out to be a typo in the music

With the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Stephan has enjoyed so many special performances, from the BBC Proms to playing with OMD at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and, of course, hundreds of concerts at the phenomenal Philharmonic Hall.
He says that his time with the Orchestra has been an endless list of highs!

Fun Facts:
Aside from music, Stephan enjoys walking, cycling, swimming, gardening and motor racing. If he weren’t a professional musician, he would have become an architect or engineer.
