ROYAL LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Journey through Italy

Beethoven: Overture, Coriolan
Berlioz: Harold in Italy
Mendelssohn: Symphony No.4 'Italian'
Rossini: Overture, William Tell

Andrew Manze: conductor
Lawrence Power: viola

Lord Byron’s narrative poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage is about a maverick, an outcast, a revolutionary. But bring him together with Hector Berlioz, and the result is the world’s craziest viola concerto.

The wonderful British viola player Lawrence Power is harold on tonight’s Italian adventure, one that takes us from the sunlit fiesta of Mendelssohn’s Fourth symphony to the headlong gallop of Rossini’s William Tell Overture: the one piece everyone in the world knows! Beethoven’s overture to the play about the Roman soldier Coriolan makes a suitably dramatic start to an evening of sunshine, celebration and shameless excess, conducted with verve by Andrew Manze.
