John Adams Son of Chamber Symphony

Geoffrey Paterson conductor

Complementing the Orchestra’s Beethoven Symphony Festival, Liverpool Philharmonic’s 10:10 celebrates composers who have taken cues from the great German master. Jay Capperauld quotes from Beethoven's String Quartet No.14 and remembers how Bruckner reportedly held his hero’s exhumed skull, while the Op.18 No.6 Quartet forms a ‘floor plan’ for Composer in Focus Caroline Shaw’s work. John Adams cheekily uses a motif from the Ninth Symphony and George Stevenson, in this world premiere, takes inspiration from Beethoven's coffee habit. Samantha Fernando’s Formations embraces rest and renewal on this winter’s evening.
