‘Shirley is a time traveller, a conduit for essential human aches, one of the greatest artists who ever lived, and yet utterly humble’ Stewart Lee
One of the most important voices in British Folk, singer and song collector Shirley Collins returns to performing in her beloved home county with music from her first release in nearly 40 years, Lodestar.
A key part of the British Folk revival of the 60s and 70s, her voice is still as captivating now as it was then, years after she was robbed of her voice for 30 years due to an emotional crisis. Her new album, Lodestar, shows that, even at the age of 81, Shirley still pushes at the boundaries of folk music.
Lodestar has topped many of the end of year poles from fRoots to The Wire. Shirley’s band features members of Trembling Bells, Rattle on the Stovepipe and Cyclobe.
Special guests in Liverpool are Alasdair Roberts (part of The Furrow Collective, who won Best Group at the BBC 2 Folk Awards 2017), Olivia Chaney and Boss Morris.
The show includes a collection of English, American and Cajun songs from the 16th Century to the 1950s. It features Boss dancers; Lodestar live (8 musicians and a Morris Dancer) and visuals designed by film maker Nick Abrahams.
