Britten Sinfonia da Requiem
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.4
Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker: Act 2
Vasily Petrenko conductor
Boris Giltburg piano
Boris Giltburg and Vasily reunite for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.4 – the sound of a man in transition, newly arrived in New York and exploring trends like jazz and impressionism. Britten reaches new artistic maturity in his Sinfonia da Requiem too. It’s a powerful plea for peace and we hear it now ahead of the 50th anniversary of his death. Perhaps the most magical ballet score ever, Tchaikovsky’s festive favourite The Nutcracker never fails to please – especially under the baton of Vasily Petrenko tonight.
Post-concert Question Time – starts 15 minutes after the concert ends (in the Music Room) with Conductor Vasily Petrenko and pianist Boris Giltburg.
