The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable former Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade (2010-2015) will deliver a lecture entitled "Brexit and the North-South Divide".
Born in 1943, the Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable was Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade (2010-2015). He was Member of Parliament for Twickenham (1997-2015); Deputy Leader of the Lib Dems (2007-2010) and Shadow Chancellor (2003-2010).
Sir Vince read Natural Sciences and Economics at Cambridge University, where he was President of the Union, followed by a PhD at Glasgow University. From 1966 to 1968, he was Treasury Finance Officer for the Kenya Government. After lecturing at Glasgow University in Economics, he worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as a First Secretary in the Diplomatic Service (1974-76). He was then appointed Deputy Director of the Overseas Development Institute, working for a time as a Special Advisor for the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. From 1983 to 1990, he worked as Special Advisor on Economic Affairs for the Commonwealth Secretary General. In 1990, he joined Shell International, taking up the post of Chief Economist in 1995.
He served as a Labour councillor in Glasgow between 1971 and 1974. He has been a member of the Lib Dems (and its antecedent the SDP) in Twickenham since 1981 and remains a member of the local party. He contested Twickenham six times from 1992 and won in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2010, being defeated in 2015. He is a supporter of the Social Liberal Forum.
Sir Vince is a Visiting Professor at London School of Economics (attached to the Institute of Global Affairs), Nottingham University (Economics Department) and St Mary University in Twickenham. He is also a governor of Richmond Adult and Community College and a life time fellow of the City Lit. He is also Chair of HCT Group, the bus company and one of the UK's leading social enterprises and Chair (designate) of the Hampshire Community Bank (currently seeking regulatory clearance).
He is a keen supporter and patron of many local and national charities, including CrossRoads Care, SPEAR London, Together as One, Shooting Star Chase, The Mulberry Centre and the Twickenham and Thames Valley Bee-keepers' Association, Otakar Kraus Trust, Feltham Visitors and Homelink. He also actively supports numerous international charities, including Jeevika Trust (India), Ndoro Charity (Zimbabwe) and Help a Poor Child (Africa and India).
An enthusiastic seasoned dancer for 25 years, he was a guest dancer on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas show in 2010.
